POLICY & ADVOCACY
The UK has the foundations to lead in the global clean economy. What it lacks is the policy framework to get there. We work with ministers, officials, and Select Committees to close the gap between policy intent and what actually gets built.
OUR POLICY PRIORITIES
Our three current priority asks - the changes we believe will have the greatest impact on the UK’s ability to start, scale, and retain world-class clean technology businesses.
Close the Scale-Up Finance Gap
Britain invents world-first clean technologies, then loses the companies at the scale-up stage for lack of patient capital. We're calling on government to reform the National Wealth Fund and British Business Bank mandates to make long-duration, patient finance an explicit goal, and to champion blended finance mechanisms, pairing public and private capital, for the technologies that need it most.
Build the Domestic Industrial Base
Clean technology is capital-intensive and strategically critical, but UK support is too narrow and rewards where things get assembled, not who owns the technology. We're pushing government to extend procurement reform, manufacturing incentives and demonstration facilities across all clean tech verticals, and to weight support towards UK-owned IP, not just UK manufacturing.
Make British Energy Affordable for British Industry
British industry pays some of the highest electricity prices among major economies. Government has started decoupling gas from electricity prices and cutting costs for manufacturers, but the relief doesn't arrive until 2027 and excludes most cleantech manufacturers. We're pushing government to widen eligibility to cleantech and bring the timeline forward.
HOW WE INFLUENCE
CfUK engages with government and Parliament on the policy issues that matter most for UK cleantech. This includes consultation responses, parliamentary representations and contributions to wider policy debates. Our engagement focuses on ensuring that the priorities and practical experience of the cleantech sector are reflected in policymaking, particularly around innovation, investment, regulation and the transition to a low-carbon economy.Through this work, CfUK provides a constructive industry voice and supports policies that enable UK cleantech businesses to innovate, scale and compete internationally.
